Crate training is a method used to familiarise dogs with a designated crate or kennel so they feel comfortable and secure. It is commonly used to help teach dogs bladder control, so there is no need for the dreaded midnight potty runs. While this is very appealing, we crate-train our dogs for a different reason.
Dogs, by nature, are den animals. Having a designated space that’s just theirs teaches them to relax and feel secure. Think of it as their own little sanctuary, where they can escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Have you ever had a dog follow you everywhere, even to the bathroom? While it’s cute, it can actually be a sign of stress. Dogs who haven’t been crate trained are more prone to suffer from separation anxiety – that’s why we do it. It’s not a punishment; it’s a chance for them to unwind and recharge.
So how do you crate-train your dog?
The good news is, they start their crate-training with us. Our puppies begin their crate training at 6 weeks (they will have a snuggle buddy from their litter for the first week!). We then transition them to their own cozy crate, setting them up for a lifetime of comfort and security. By the time your pup comes home with you, they will already know how to hold their bladder overnight.
